School Visits Promoting "Volunteerism" I have enjoyed visiting with students and discussing "Volunteerism."
The Helper Coloring Book has veen very helpful in promoting discussion about ways children can help in their
homes, schools, and communities as shown in the pictures below. Children are eager to talk about their experiences.
Their gifts to me are the BEST! Volunteering can be fun and very rewarding!

My interest in"Volunteerism" started during high school, as I volunteered at our localhospital as a Junior Volunteer in several departments. I also volunteered on a medical mission team to Nova Contagem, Brazil providing medical aid, dentistry, shoes, and shelter to poverty stricken areas. Through these and other volunteer experiences I have come to realize that not only how much help I am giving to others, but also how much joy I receive when I help others. Therefore, I desire to encourage others to volunteer and share with them the benefits for the recipients and for the volunteer. Volunteering is not just one project, but it is a way of life. To encourage young children to be helpers and then as they grow older become "volunteers," I have written and published a children's book titled "Chester's Helping Paws." A portion of the proceeds of this book are being donated to the Children's Miracle Network and to the Jackson-Madison County Humane Society. Contact information for both organizations has been placed directly in the book and both organizations are promoted at each of the book signings and promotions. The book is being donated to local libraries and hospitals. Young children have also responded as I have shared the "Helper Coloring Book" that was compiled to promote discussions on helping and volunteering. I have visited several elementary school classes and children's hour at local libraries discussing volunteering using the coloring book as a tool. Approximately 600 copies of the "Helper Coloring Book" were shared at the Kids Health Fair on Saturday, May 19, 2007 at the Boys & Girls Club of Madison County. It is my desire that many children will be exposed to volunteering through "Chester's Helping Paws" and the "Helper Coloring Book" and therefore desire to volunteer. Another tool that has been useful is the development of this website. As you will notice, many volunteer organizations on the links page have been included with a brief description of their activities and a link to their organizations. While encouraging others to volunteer, it is very important to continue my favorite volunteering activities. I have several nursing home and assisted living centers where I provide vocal concerts. I have volunteered my time promoting my platform at various fundraisers and apperances. I always encourage others to either continue volunteering or find something that interests them and try it. As stated before, it is a way of life for me and I desire to share that with others in hopes that they, too, will make it a way of life. Ellen Carrington
